National Gas Refinery – Halegan and Sefid Baghoun Gas Field Development
The National Gas Refinery Project for the Halegan and Sefid Baghoun Gas Fields is a comprehensive upstream and midstream development led by the Iranian Central Oil Fields Company (ICOFC). This project covers the full cycle of design, procurement, construction, and commissioning for advanced wellhead infrastructure, gas gathering systems, and modern refinery plants. The objective is to support Iran’s energy needs by expanding domestic gas production and export capacity.
The scope of this initiative includes the development of integrated facilities to produce up to 20,000 MMSCMD (million standard cubic meters per day) of natural gas from 12 production wells. The produced gas will be delivered to the national grid via the IGAT-4 (Iran Gas Trunkline 4) pipeline, supporting reliable gas supply across the country. The project also leverages the expertise and capabilities of Iranian companies for every stage—from initial design through final commissioning—ensuring local knowledge transfer and sustainable industry growth.
Tehran Raymand Consulting Engineers has been appointed as the project consultant for the pre-conceptual and feasibility study phases, responsible for comprehensive technical assessments and project viability evaluations.
Facilities and Process Units of the National Gas Refinery
- Well Head Facilities: Initial production control, separation, and safety systems at each of the 12 wellheads, providing reliable flow management and monitoring.
- Flow Lines: A network of 12 dedicated pipelines transports gas from each well to the central processing facilities, minimizing bottlenecks and maximizing efficiency.
- Manifolds: Three manifolds strategically combine gas flows from multiple wells, streamlining gathering and optimizing process control.
- Reception Facilities: Centralized stations receive and meter gas arriving from the wellheads and manifolds, preparing it for downstream treatment.
- Gas Treatment (RIPI License): Advanced processing units (under RIPI technology license) remove contaminants and condition the gas to meet downstream processing and export specifications.
- Dehydration and Dew Point Control: Systems to remove water vapor and precisely control the dew point, preventing hydrate formation and ensuring pipeline safety.
- MEG Injection and Regeneration: Monoethylene Glycol (MEG) injection units prevent hydrate formation in flow lines, with regeneration systems to recycle used MEG for sustainable operations.
- Propane Refrigeration: Refrigeration units using propane provide low-temperature chilling for gas processing and condensate stabilization.
- Condensate Stabilization and Off Gas Compression: Units to stabilize hydrocarbon condensate and compress off gases for utilization or safe disposal.
- Sour Water Stripper: Specialized treatment to remove hydrogen sulfide and other contaminants from process water.
- Sulfur Recovery Unit (RIPI License): State-of-the-art sulfur recovery using licensed technology from RIPI, ensuring efficient and environmentally compliant recovery from the gas stream.
- Condensate Storage and Transfer: Secure storage and handling systems for stabilized condensate, facilitating safe transfer to export pipelines.
- Utilities: All supporting systems, including power generation, water supply, fire protection, instrumentation, and plant control.
- Gas Export Pipeline: Main export pipeline delivering processed natural gas to the IGAT-4 trunkline for integration into Iran’s national grid.
- Condensate Export Pipeline: Dedicated line for exporting stabilized condensate to end users or export terminals.
By integrating advanced processing technologies, local engineering expertise, and robust infrastructure, the National Gas Refinery project at Halegan and Sefid Baghoun fields is set to boost Iran’s energy security, resource utilization, and export capacity.
