Odorant Production Unit Project – South Pars Gas Field

The Odorant Production Unit project is a strategic initiative led by the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) to address critical operational needs within Iran’s oil and gas industry. As part of its broader mission to support safe, reliable, and sustainable gas supply, NIGC’s Research, Development, and Technology Department has launched the establishment of a modern facility dedicated to odorant production.

This new Odorant Production Unit is being developed in collaboration with the Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI), a recognized leader in engineering solutions and process simulation for the oil and gas sector. The partnership between NIGC and RIPI is based on RIPI’s extensive experience in advanced research and its proven record of delivering innovative engineering packages to the Iranian energy industry.

Under the signed contract, RIPI will prepare the complete Basic engineering package and the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) tender documents required for the unit’s realization. The odorant unit is designed to deliver a production capacity of 800 tons per year and will be installed within the South Pars Gas Field Phase 1 complex, a key natural gas hub located in southwest Iran along the Persian Gulf.

Process Sections and Technical Features

The Odorant Production Unit is engineered with multiple specialized process sections to ensure the efficient and high-purity manufacture of odorant chemicals. The main sections of the process flow include:

  • Pre-wash Section: Initial stage where raw feed is pre-washed to remove impurities and prepare for extraction.
  • Extraction Section: Advanced extraction techniques isolate mercaptans and other target compounds essential for odorant production.
  • Regeneration Section: Recovery and recycling of valuable process materials to enhance sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Mercaptan Distillations: High-efficiency distillation to separate and concentrate mercaptans, the primary odorant agents used in natural gas distribution.
  • Product Drying Section: Final drying of the odorant product to ensure it meets required purity and handling standards before storage and shipment.

These process sections are designed to optimize efficiency, safety, and product quality, directly supporting the operational reliability of Iran’s national gas network and export systems.

Project Management and Consulting Services

To guarantee effective project execution and technology transfer, NIGC has appointed Tehran Raymand Consulting Engineers as the managing consultant. Tehran Raymand’s responsibilities include reviewing and validating process technology developments, engineering concepts, and execution strategies proposed for the odorant unit.

Through this consulting role, Tehran Raymand ensures that executive and operating companies have access to flexible, precise, and efficient odorant production technologies. This enhances the bottom line, operational safety, and environmental compliance for the Iranian oil and gas sector.

The successful completion of the Odorant Production Unit project will play a vital role in enabling NIGC to meet national gas quality standards and guarantee the safety of natural gas distribution across Iran.
