Lab Sefid Gas Gathering and Injection Project

The Lab Sefid Gas Gathering and Injection Project is a major environmental and operational initiative managed by the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC). The project is designed to reduce the flaring of associated gas from the Lab Sefid Oil Production plant, located about 50 kilometers northeast of Dezful in Iran’s oil-rich southwest. By capturing and reinjecting associated gas, the project addresses key goals of environmental protection, resource optimization, and sustainable oilfield operation.

This strategic project involves the expansion of the existing Lab Sefid Oil Production facilities, introducing new processing units and pipelines to collect, compress, and inject the gas previously released into the atmosphere. The initiative is an important step for Iran in meeting international standards for emission reduction, energy conservation, and efficient hydrocarbon utilization.

Project Objectives and Benefits

  • Reduce Gas Flaring: The primary objective is to mitigate the environmental impact of gas flaring by capturing and utilizing associated gas produced alongside crude oil.
  • Enhance Gas Utilization: The captured gas is gathered, compressed, and injected into Lab Sefid well no.7, supporting reservoir management and pressure maintenance for enhanced oil recovery.
  • Supplementary Gas Source: Due to limited associated gas volumes, the project also transfers Bangestan gas from well no.5 as a supplementary source, ensuring sufficient gas for the injection system.

Key Project Components

  • Expansion Units: New units are integrated with the existing oil production plant to support gas gathering and processing.
  • Sweetening Unit: Designed to process and sweeten 17,000 standard barrels per day of sour crude oil from the Lab Sefid and Palangan fields, removing impurities and ensuring safe handling.
  • Gas Compression & Injection Unit: Compressed gas is prepared for injection into Lab Sefid well no.7. The maximum required injection rate is 27,000 MMSCFD, achieved via multiple compression stages.
  • Pipeline Facilities:
    • Gas Transfer Pipeline: Transports Bangestan gas from well no.5 to the production unit over a distance of approximately 5.5 km.
    • Injection Pipeline: Delivers compressed gas from the Compression Unit to Lab Sefid well no.7, covering roughly 6 km.
  • Additional Facilities:
    • Instrument/Plant Air System
    • Fuel Oil/Gas System
    • Closed Drain System
    • Flaring System
    • Fire, Potable, and Service Water Network
    • Waste Water Treatment
    • Chemical Injection System

Process Flow

  1. Gas Gathering: Associated gas from oil production is collected using newly installed pipelines and gathering systems.
  2. Compression: The gathered gas is compressed in multiple stages, increasing the pressure to meet injection requirements.
  3. Injection: High-pressure gas is injected into Lab Sefid well no.7 to support reservoir management and minimize emissions.
  4. Supplementary Gas: If needed, Bangestan gas from well no.5 is routed via the Gas Transfer Pipeline to supplement the injection gas supply.

The Lab Sefid Gas Gathering and Injection Project is a model for sustainable oilfield operation in Iran, delivering both environmental and operational benefits. Successful implementation will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resource management, and contribute to the long-term productivity of the Lab Sefid oil field.
