Kupal Gas Pipeline and Gas Injection Plant Project

The Kupal Gas Pipeline and Gas Injection Plant Project is a critical reservoir maintenance and enhanced oil recovery initiative led by the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC). This project is strategically located in the prolific Kupal Oil Field in southwest Iran, an area recognized for its substantial crude oil reserves and ongoing contribution to the nation’s energy sector.

The project is designed in full alignment with Iran’s reservoir management policies, focusing on maximizing oil recovery and extending the productive life of the Kupal Oil Field. By injecting natural gas into the Asmary formation—a key reservoir layer within the field—NISOC aims to maintain reservoir pressure, boost oil displacement, and ensure sustainable production over the long term.

Project Scope and Objectives

  • Gas Injection Volume: The facility is engineered to inject up to 300 MMSCFD (million standard cubic feet per day) of natural gas into the Asmary layer of the Kupal oil reservoir, achieving an injection pressure of 270 barg.
  • Gas Supply and Pipeline: Injection gas is supplied from the Shahid Mohammadi Compressor Station, which delivers gas at a pressure of 54 barg through a dedicated feed transmission pipeline to the new Kupal Gas Injection Compressor Station.
  • Compressor Station Expansion: At present, a single compressor station operates at the endpoint of the gas pipeline with a capacity to handle 150 MMSCFD. However, the total injection requirement is 300 MMSCFD, creating the need for additional compression infrastructure.
  • Project Solution: To resolve the current capacity limitation, the project involves the design, engineering, and construction of a second gas compressor station at the endpoint of the feed pipeline. This additional station will be capable of boosting and injecting the remaining 150 MMSCFD, ensuring the full volume of gas can be efficiently injected into the reservoir.

The integration of new compression facilities, modern pipeline infrastructure, and advanced automation will support safe, reliable gas transport and high-efficiency injection, directly contributing to improved oil recovery rates and long-term reservoir health.

Kupal Gas Injection Project not only supports NISOC’s goals for sustainable oilfield management but also aligns with national strategies for efficient energy utilization and environmental stewardship in the Iranian petroleum industry.
