The Khatoon Abad Acid Plant Project is a major environmental and industrial initiative managed by the Nonferrous Industries Process, Engineering & Construction Company (NIPEC). This advanced plant is being constructed to process and neutralize the off-gases generated from the copper smelter plant in Khatoon Abad, Iran. The project is strategically focused on both environmental protection and value creation through the production of commercial-grade sulfuric acid.
The acid plant will process approximately 230,000 normal cubic meters per hour (Nm³/hr) of smelter gas, efficiently removing harmful contaminants. The incoming gas contains a high concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO₂), allowing for the production of sulfuric acid with concentrations ranging from 93% to 98.5%. The plant is engineered for a robust production capacity of about 2,950 tons per day (t/d), making it a significant contributor to Iran’s industrial chemical sector.
The core function of the Khatoon Abad Acid Plant is to protect the surrounding environment by removing SO₂ and other contaminants from the smelter off-gases, thereby preventing atmospheric pollution and environmental damage. The SO₂ is converted into high-purity sulfuric acid, which is then marketed for industrial applications. This not only supports regulatory compliance but also transforms a challenging waste stream into a valuable commercial product.
Tehran Raymand Consulting Engineers has been appointed as the project’s detailed engineering and procurement consultant, responsible for the design, equipment selection, and technical oversight to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the new acid plant.
The plant is composed of multiple specialized units, each designed for a specific function within the gas treatment and acid production process:
The integrated design of these units enables the Khatoon Abad Acid Plant to achieve high operational efficiency, environmental stewardship, and production reliability.
